Cold Laser Therapy in Lombard, IL

Deep-tissue laser therapy for pain that has not responded to rest, ice, or "wait and see"

You have a sore knee, a stubborn shoulder, or low back pain that flares every time you sit too long. You have tried rest. You have tried ice and ibuprofen. It settles for a week and comes right back.

Cold laser therapy is one of the tools we use to change that. It is not a gimmick, and it is not magic. It is a well-studied way to calm inflammation and speed up tissue repair, and it works best when it is part of a plan that also fixes why the tissue got irritated in the first place.

Cold laser therapy uses focused light to reduce pain and inflammation and speed tissue healing without heat damage, needles, or drugs. At True Health in Lombard, IL, we use a LightForce FXi Class IV therapy laser, which reaches deeper tissue than a traditional low-level “cold” laser. Sessions take about 5 to 10 minutes and feel like gentle warmth.

What Is Cold Laser Therapy?

Cold laser therapy is the everyday name for photobiomodulation: light at specific wavelengths applied to injured tissue. The light is absorbed by your cells, and that absorption triggers a chain of chemical changes. The result is less inflammation, better blood flow, and faster repair of muscle, tendon, ligament, and joint tissue.

“Cold” simply means the laser is not cutting or burning anything. It is the opposite of a surgical laser.

In our Lombard office we use a LightForce FXi therapy laser. It is a Class IV laser, a step up from the small handheld cold laser devices many clinics use. It delivers up to 15 watts across two wavelengths (810 nm and 980 nm), which is what lets the light reach a deep hip, a low back, or a thick shoulder instead of stopping at the skin.

How Does Laser Therapy Work?

Your cells have a built-in energy factory called mitochondria. When laser light at the right wavelength hits them, they produce more ATP, the fuel cells use to repair themselves. At the same time the light widens small blood vessels, which brings in oxygen and clears out the waste products that keep an area swollen and sore.

That is why laser therapy helps with three things at once:

  • Pain. Light calms overactive nerve endings, so the area hurts less quickly.
  • Inflammation. Better circulation moves swelling out instead of letting it sit.
  • Healing. Cells with more fuel repair faster, which matters for tendons and ligaments that normally heal slowly.

Most patients feel a mild, pleasant warmth during the session. There are no needles, no medication, and no downtime.

Is Cold Laser Therapy Legitimate? Does It Work?

Fair question. There is a lot of hype around lasers, and you should be skeptical of any clinic promising a miracle.

Here is the honest version. Laser therapy has decades of research behind it and is FDA-cleared for pain relief and inflammation. Studies show meaningful benefit for conditions like knee osteoarthritis, plantar fasciitis, tendinopathy, neck pain, and low back pain. It is not a cure-all, and it works better on some problems than others. Results depend on the dose, the device, and whether anyone bothers to fix what caused the injury.

That last part is where most laser clinics fall short. Laser calms the tissue. It does not change the movement pattern, the joint restriction, or the weak stabilizers that irritated the tissue in the first place. If nobody addresses those, the pain comes back once the sessions stop.

We use laser therapy as one piece of a corrective plan, not the whole plan. That is the difference between feeling better for a month and staying better.

Cold Laser vs. Class IV Laser Therapy

Traditional cold laser (Class 3 / LLLT)Class IV laser (our LightForce FXi)
PowerUnder 0.5 watts0.5 to 15 watts
Depth reachedSuperficial: skin, small jointsDeep: hips, low back, shoulders, thick muscle
Session length15 to 30 minutesAbout 5 to 10 minutes

Both are drug-free and non-invasive. The main practical difference is that a Class IV laser delivers a therapeutic dose to deep tissue in a fraction of the time.

What to Expect at Your Visit

Every new patient starts with a Discovery Assessment. We look at the painful area and everything connected to it, explain what we find in plain language, and tell you whether laser therapy belongs in your plan. If it does, your first session usually happens the same day.

A laser session itself is simple. You and the provider wear protective glasses. The handpiece moves over the area in slow strokes, with light pressure from the massage-ball head. Most areas take 5 to 10 minutes. You walk out and go on with your day.

Most tissue problems respond best to a short series of visits spaced close together, then tapering off as the area heals. We will tell you the expected number of sessions before you start. If it is 8 visits, we say 8 visits.

What laser therapy treats: conditions we use it for every week

Laser therapy is not the right tool for every problem. It is the right tool for irritated, inflamed, or slow-healing soft tissue and joints. It is a regular part of our plans for knee pain, shoulder pain, sciatica, and sports injuries. Not sure your problem is on the list? That is what the assessment is for.

Laser Therapy Is Part of the Plan, Not the Plan

Pain is the last thing to show up, not the first. By the time your knee or shoulder hurts, the tissue has usually been compensating for a joint or movement problem for months.

Laser therapy handles the tissue. Corrective chiropractic care, acupuncture, shockwave therapy, and rehab handle the reason the tissue broke down. Depending on what your assessment shows, your plan may combine several of these. Laser and shockwave in particular pair well: shockwave breaks up chronic, stuck tissue, and laser speeds the repair afterward.

You should not have to just manage this. Let’s fix it the right way so you are not stuck doing this forever.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cold Laser Therapy

Cold laser therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to reduce pain and inflammation and speed tissue repair. "Cold" means it does not cut or burn tissue. At True Health in Lombard we use a LightForce FXi Class IV laser, which delivers a stronger dose that reaches deeper joints and muscles than a standard low-level laser.

Yes. Laser therapy (photobiomodulation) is FDA-cleared for pain and inflammation and is supported by decades of published research, with the strongest evidence for joint arthritis, tendon problems, and neck and back pain. It is not a cure-all. It works best when combined with care that corrects the cause of the tissue irritation.

For inflamed, irritated, or slow-healing tissue, yes, and most patients notice a difference within the first few sessions. Results depend on the condition, the dose, and whether the underlying joint or movement problem is also being addressed. That is why we pair laser with a corrective plan instead of selling laser sessions on their own.

Laser light is absorbed by your cells' mitochondria, which respond by producing more ATP, the energy used for repair. The light also increases blood flow to the area, which reduces swelling and clears inflammatory waste. The combined effect is less pain, less inflammation, and faster healing.

No. Most people feel a mild warmth and nothing else. A session takes about 5 to 10 minutes. Most conditions respond best to a short series, often 6 to 12 visits, with the number depending on how long the problem has been building. You will get a specific plan and expected session count at your Discovery Assessment.

A note on safety: laser therapy is not used over the eyes, over a known cancer, over the abdomen during pregnancy, or over the thyroid. We screen for these at your assessment. If your pain came with numbness in both legs, loss of bladder or bowel control, unexplained weight loss, or fever, see a physician or urgent care first.
